Higher DPI means a sharper image and a bigger file. 300 DPI on a long document can take a while and use a lot of memory, since every page is rendered on your device.
The document is parsed locally. Every page will be converted — there is no page-range step here, so use the split tool first if you only want some.
PNG is lossless and larger, which suits diagrams, screenshots and anything with crisp lines. JPG is much smaller and better for photographic pages.
72 DPI for on-screen use, 150 for general purposes, 300 if the images are going to be printed. Higher DPI means bigger images and a longer wait.
A single page gives you one image file. Several pages are bundled into a ZIP, numbered in order so they stay sorted.
A PDF page is measured in points — 72 to the inch — so an A4 page is 595 by 842 points. Rendering at 150 DPI scales that by about 2.08, giving roughly 1240 by 1754 pixels. Tripling the DPI quadruples the pixel count and the file size, which is why 300 DPI is worth choosing deliberately rather than by default.
PNG stores exact pixels, so text edges stay sharp and there are no compression artefacts — at several times the size. JPG throws away detail the eye is poor at noticing, which is a good trade for scanned photographs and a bad one for fine text and line art.
This converts the whole page as it appears, including text, vectors and backgrounds. It is not the same as pulling the original embedded photographs back out of the file — the output is a picture of the page.
