Add page numbers to PDF

Add page numbers to a PDF

Pick a corner, a format and a starting number, and Quill writes a numbered text element onto every page you choose, positioned against a margin you control.

How to add page numbers to a pdf

  1. 1

    Open the PDF

Page numbering lives in the document tools panel, next to watermarking and splitting.

  2. 2

    Pick a position

Six placements are available — left, centre or right, along the top or the bottom edge.

  3. 3

    Choose a format

A bare number, a number over the total, Page n, or Page n of n. Set the starting value if the front matter should not count as page one.

  4. 4

    Apply and export

Set the font, size, colour and margin, choose all pages or a range, then download.

Numbering does not have to start at one

Documents with a cover and a contents page rarely want the first sheet labelled 1. Set the starting value so the printed numbers line up with the numbering your reader expects.

Totals are computed from the range

The n of n formats count the pages being numbered, so the denominator matches what you are actually labelling instead of the raw file length.

The margin is yours

The number is inset from the page edge by a distance you set, which matters when a document is going to be printed and bound and the gutter would otherwise swallow it.

Questions

Yes. Give a page range so the cover is skipped, and set the starting value so the first numbered sheet reads however you want.
